Statement from the Shinnecock Nation Council of Trustees Regarding the Recent Salmonella Outbreak

The Shinnecock Nation Council of Trustees is deeply concerned for the community members who became ill during the recent Salmonella outbreak and extends its wishes for a full and speedy recovery to everyone affected.

The Council became aware of reports of illness on July 2 and immediately contacted the healthcare professionals supporting the Shinnecock Health Center to coordinate a rapid public health response. The illnesses were associated with a private event held within the community. From the outset, the Council worked closely with public health officials and emergency management partners to support those affected, provide timely information, and assist with ongoing monitoring and response efforts.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, including its Emergency Management Team, the Shinnecock Health Committee, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management, and FEMA for their partnership, expertise, and rapid support in providing medical guidance, monitoring, supplies, and other critical resources throughout this response.

Community members sought medical care through Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, the Northwell Health system, and private healthcare providers. We are grateful to the physicians, nurses, emergency personnel, and healthcare teams who responded with professionalism, compassion, and care.

The health and well-being of our Tribal citizens remain the Council's highest priority. We will continue working closely with our public health partners as they complete their assessment and implement any recommendations that help strengthen our community's public health preparedness.

While this incident has been difficult for those directly affected, it also demonstrated the strength of collaboration among Tribal leadership, healthcare providers, emergency management agencies, and our community. We appreciate the patience, cooperation, and resilience shown throughout this response.

The Shinnecock Nation remains committed to protecting the health of our people while continuing to foster a safe and welcoming environment for our citizens, neighboring communities, and visitors. We thank everyone who came together to support our community and will continue to prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of our Nation.
