About the event

Join Ma’s House on August 8th for an engaging artist talk with Djelle George, a 15-year-old visual artist from Bronxville, New York. Part of the Shinnecock Speaks exhibit, which runs until September 7th, Djelle will share her experiences as a young artist inspired by her Shinnecock heritage and NYC upbringing. Her dedication to the visual arts is evident in her formal art classes and personal exploration of various mediums. Djelle’s connection to her roots is deepened by her participation in the annual Shinnecock Labor Day Weekend Pow Wow.

Djelle will discuss her piece “Blue Whale (I Have Never Eaten a Whale),” a linoleum block print that explores identity, culture, and the human-nature relationship. This artwork, characterized by striking blue hues and the intimate portrayal of a whale’s eye, invites viewers to contemplate the emotional and physical scars of these majestic creatures. Djelle’s reflection on her cultural heritage and the evolving relationship with her ancestors’ traditions is captured in the title. The Shinnecock Speaks exhibit provides a platform for Djelle to engage with her cultural identity and share her artistic vision, sparking conversations about identity, resilience, and the beauty of the natural world.
