The Shinnecock Nation is a sovereign, self-governing people — the 565th federally recognized tribe of the United States. We maintain our own elected leadership, established government-to-government relationships including with the Federal Government, and provide essential programs, services, and economic opportunities to our citizens.

But today, our sovereignty is under attack.

The Town of Southampton and the State of New York have challenged the Shinnecock Nation’s inherent rights by unlawfully claiming authority and jurisdiction over our people and our lands. These actions violate federal recognition, disregard tribal sovereignty, and perpetuate centuries of injustice.

 

This fight has already cost our Nation millions of dollars and countless hours — resources that should be supporting our children, our elders, and the overall well-being of our people. Instead, we are forced to defend rights that have long been acknowledged, while our families carry the emotional, spiritual, and financial burdens of these unjust legal battles.

We call on you to STAND with the Shinnecock Nation. We say NO MORE.
